What would happen if you put aside glasses for a day or a week? What would you do without them? Would you be able to drive? Work? Cross the street?
We asked fellow glassers on Reddit how reliant they were on their glasses and what were their thoughts on them. Here are some of the responses:
I would not have made it to adulthood without glasses. I can’t read, write, cook, drive, or see where I am going without glasses. I’m also extremely uncoordinated and have poor proprioception. Combine all that and I probably would have fallen down the stairs or stepped into a hole or in front of a car or slammed my head into something and died.
Seriously what the hell kind of question is this? Let’s go ask people who use wheelchairs or hearing aids or prosthetic limbs how “reliant” they are on the things that help them participate in society and you know, live, as if they are actual people and not just an extension of this ridiculous idea that using a tool that was invented for that purpose somehow makes them less than people who don’t.

I am extremely nearsighted, and couldn’t function in my day to day life without glasses. I don’t mind wearing glasses because I like seeing, but I hate how my glasses look because they make my eyes look so small. I used to wear contacts but as I have grown older, my eyes are much drier and I can’t tolerate them.

I have keratoconus. My astigmatism is so bad it can’t be fully corrected without surgery. And the severity is determined by the dilation of my pupils. I am completely blind in the dark. I would likely function but by 40 be clearly blind because it is a degenerative condition in my case. My world without corrective lenses is so insanely blurred together I have to squint to read something in front of me or the letters combine. I can’t imagine life without my glasses and contacts.

There’d be no driving, no reading, looking after and feeding my kids would be hard, I couldn’t do my job and definitely couldn’t do my art. My prescription is +6 and I could see things ok far away but nothing up close.

Debilitating headaches. I’d be able to drive still and go to work. But I’d be tired and have a lot of headaches. Reading subtitles will be a challenge

This is a great story!! It’s amazing to hear the progression of a self-righteous choice through glasses. Keep it up!!
